Switchboard upgrades: the job behind most other jobs
A lot of general electrical work on the coast starts at the switchboard, because the board decides what the house can take. Plenty of Red Beach, Stanmore Bay and Manly homes went up between the 1960s and the 1980s and still run their original boards, some with rewireable ceramic fuses and no safety switches at all. The wiring behind them is frequently fine; the protection in front of it is decades behind.
The piece that matters is the RCD, the safety switch. A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload. An RCD watches for current leaking somewhere it should not go, through a person for example, and cuts the supply in milliseconds. A board can be full of working breakers and still have nothing in it that protects a person, which is the honest argument for upgrading. If your board has test buttons on some of its switches, you have RCDs. If it has none anywhere, that is the single strongest reason to have it looked at.
An upgrade is also what unlocks the additions people actually ring us about. An EV charger, a new kitchen's oven and induction circuits, a heat pump or underfloor heating all need capacity and modern protection, and a full or ageing board blocks every one of them until it is dealt with.
Power points, lighting and the everyday additions
New power points and USB outlets are the bread and butter of this work: bedrooms that were built with one socket, kitchens that predate the bench full of appliances, home offices that appeared after 2020. What decides the price is rarely the outlet itself but the cable run to it and whether the switchboard has room, which is why we look before we quote.
Outdoor work is its own category on the coast. Garden lighting, outdoor sockets, power to a shed, spa pool circuits and gate motors all live outside, and out on the peninsula the salt air is genuinely hard on outdoor gear. We fit outdoor-rated fittings, protect the circuits properly, and position equipment with some shelter where the layout allows, because a fitting that suits Silverdale's inland streets will not last on a seaward wall in Gulf Harbour.
Ceiling fans, extractor fans, heated towel rails and smart home wiring preparation round it out. None of these are big jobs on their own, and we are happy to batch several small things into one visit: one callout through the list costs less than three.
Older homes and newer ones need different work
On an older home, the first step is understanding what is already there. Circuits get added to over decades, and not always by someone licensed. Before we extend or modernise anything we test and trace, because assuming what a cable does in a 1970s house is how people get hurt. Where we find previous work that was never done to standard, we tell you plainly what it is, what it affects, and what it would cost to put right.
In Millwater, Milldale and the other new-build areas, the work is usually additions rather than remediation: extra outlets where the plan was optimistic about how few you would need, EV charger circuits, and smart home wiring. Newer boards mostly have the capacity and protection ready to go, which keeps these jobs quick.

General electrical work of this kind is prescribed electrical work in New Zealand, so it legally has to be done by a licensed electrician and certified. You get that certification on completion. Keep it with the house paperwork: it is what your insurer and any future buyer's lawyer will ask about. Everything we do is covered by a workmanship guarantee.

Does my old switchboard need upgrading?
Not automatically. The honest test: does it have RCDs (look for test buttons on the switches), does it have spare capacity, and is it free of rewireable ceramic fuses? Fail two of those and it is worth an assessment. A board with working RCDs, room to spare and no signs of heat is very likely fine, and we will tell you so.
Can you install an EV charger at my home?
Yes. We install dedicated EV charging circuits with the specific RCD protection they need. We assess your switchboard capacity first, because that is what decides whether the install is straightforward or needs board work, and we would rather you know that before you buy a charger.
How many power points can I add?
It depends on your existing circuits and switchboard capacity. Often several outlets can be added without major changes, and we will tell you where the limit is when we look at the board. If the board is full, we will price the outlets and the board work separately so you can see both numbers.
Do you do outdoor and garden electrical work?
Yes: garden lighting, outdoor sockets, shed and garage supplies, spa pool circuits and gate motors. Everything outdoors gets outdoor-rated fittings and proper RCD protection, and near the water we choose gear and positions that stand up to salt air.
Will I get paperwork for the work?
Yes. This kind of work is prescribed electrical work, so it is done by a licensed electrician and certified on completion. The certificate is your proof the work was done to NZ standards, and it matters for insurance and whenever you sell.
Can you tidy up work a previous owner did?
Yes, and it is a job we do a lot on older coast homes and lifestyle blocks. We test and trace what is there, tell you plainly what was done properly and what was not, and quote the fix. We would rather correct previous bad work than build on top of it.
Do you handle whole-home rewiring?
Yes, though full rewires are less common than people fear. More often a house needs a section done: the kitchen, an old extension, or the run to the garage. We test first and tell you what genuinely needs doing, what can wait, and what is fine as it is.
