Do I need a dedicated EV charger at home?
Not strictly. Most EVs come with a slow trickle cable that plugs into a standard 10A wall socket, but it adds range very slowly and is hard on the outlet. A dedicated 7kW wall charger is around 3-4 times faster and is purpose-built for daily use, which is why most EV owners install one within a few months.
Will my switchboard handle an EV charger?
Most homes on the Hibiscus Coast can support a 7kW single-phase charger, but it depends on your existing switchboard, mains supply, and what else is drawing load. We always assess your switchboard before quoting, and if capacity is tight we can usually fit a smart load-managed charger so you avoid a full switchboard upgrade.
Which EV charger should I buy?
The right charger depends on your car, your daily driving, and your home's electrical setup. Common choices in NZ include Tesla Wall Connector, EVnex (a great Kiwi brand), Wallbox Pulsar Plus, and Schneider EVlink. We're happy to talk through options before you buy, and we can supply and install as a package if you'd rather not source the unit yourself.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward install is usually a half-day on site. The job involves running the cable from your switchboard to the charger location, fitting an RCD-protected dedicated circuit, mounting the charger, commissioning it, and testing. If your switchboard needs upgrading or the cable run is long, it can extend into a full day.
What does it cost?
A typical residential install on the Hibiscus Coast lands between $1,500 and $3,500 including labour, cable, dedicated circuit, and the Certificate of Compliance. The main variables are cable length, any switchboard work, and whether you're supplying the charger or asking us to. We always quote upfront so there are no surprises.
Do I need a Certificate of Compliance?
Yes. EV charger installs are prescribed electrical work in NZ, which means they have to be done by a licensed electrician and certified. We issue the Certificate of Compliance and Electrical Safety Certificate with every install, which is what your insurer and any future buyer of the home will expect to see.
