How a repair call works
We diagnose first. The difference between a repair that holds and a callback three weeks later is whether the actual cause was found, so we take the time to trace the fault properly: testing the circuit, isolating appliances, and checking the connections upstream of wherever the symptom showed up. A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job, and resetting it over and over is ignoring what it is telling you.
Once we know what is wrong, you get a clear quote before any repair work starts. Finding the fault never commits you to the fix. You decide with the cost in front of you, and for planned follow-up work like a switchboard upgrade or a new circuit, the quote is free and no obligation.
The faults we repair most often
Circuit breakers that trip repeatedly are the most common call. An occasional trip when the kettle, dryer and heater all run at once is usually an overloaded circuit. A breaker that will not stay on points at a genuine fault: a failing appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting, or a damaged connection somewhere on the circuit.
Flickering lights come next. A single flickering lamp is usually the fitting or the bulb. Whole rooms flickering together, or lights that dim when big appliances start, suggest a loose connection, and loose connections generate heat. That is why we treat flickering as more than an annoyance.
Dead power points, sockets that are warm or buzzing, and hot water that has stopped heating round out the list. On hot water, the fault is often electrical rather than the cylinder itself: a failed element or thermostat is a much smaller job than a replacement cylinder, so it is worth a call to us before a call to a plumber.

Working one patch for years teaches you that faults follow the housing. Red Beach, Stanmore Bay and Manly carry plenty of homes from the 1960s to the 1980s, where the wiring is often sound but the switchboard protection is decades old. Out on the peninsula around Whangaparaoa and Gulf Harbour, salt air corrodes outdoor sockets and fittings faster than anywhere else we work, and corroded connections cause a lot of nuisance tripping. Millwater and Milldale are mostly new builds, where the usual culprit is a rushed fit-out detail rather than tired wiring: accurate fault-finding matters more than replacement there.

When not to wait

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
An occasional trip with several big appliances running is usually an overloaded circuit. How much does a typical repair cost?
Fault-finding runs on time, because until the cause is found nobody honestly knows the size of the job. We diagnose first, then give you a clear quote before any repair work starts, so you always decide with the number in front of you.
My hot water has stopped working. Electrician or plumber?
Often electrician first. A tripped breaker, a failed element or a thermostat that has given up are common causes, they are quick to diagnose, and an element swap costs far less than a new cylinder. If it turns out to be the cylinder itself, we will tell you straight and you can call the plumber with a proper answer.
Can I do my own electrical repairs?
Only the safe basics: resetting a breaker, changing a bulb, unplugging appliances to isolate a fault. Most repair work, including anything involving wiring, fittings or the switchboard, is prescribed electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician. Uncertified work can also cause real problems with insurance.
A socket or switch feels warm. Is that urgent?
Yes. Warmth, buzzing or browning around a socket or switch means a connection is generating heat, and that is how electrical fires start. Unplug everything from it, stop using it, and call. This is one of the faults we move fastest on.
Do you repair rental properties for landlords?
