Switchboard Upgrades: When an Old Board Is Actually a Problem

An old switchboard is not automatically unsafe. It becomes a problem when it has no RCDs protecting the circuits, when it is full and there is no room to add anything, or when it is still running rewireable ceramic fuses. Age on its own is not the test.

We end a lot of repair jobs across Red Beach, Orewa and the peninsula having this conversation, so it is worth setting out properly rather than at the end of a callout.

Fuse, breaker, RCD: what each one actually does

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

  • A fuse melts when too much current flows, breaking the circuit. The rewireable ceramic kind has to be rewired by hand afterwards, which is exactly as bad an idea as it sounds, because the wrong wire gauge quietly removes the protection
  • A circuit breaker does the same job as a fuse but resets with a switch. Better, and what most boards use now
  • An RCD does something different entirely. It watches for current leaking somewhere it should not go, for example through a person, and cuts the supply in milliseconds. A breaker protects the wiring. An RCD protects you

That distinction is the whole argument for an upgrade. A board can be full of perfectly functional breakers and still have nothing in it that protects a person.

The honest test for whether yours needs doing

Look at your board. You do not need to open it, and you should not.

  1. Are there any RCDs? They are usually wider than the breakers and have a test button on them. No test buttons anywhere is the single biggest reason to upgrade
  2. Are there ceramic fuse holders you pull out by hand? If so the board is old enough that everything else on this list probably applies too
  3. Is it full? Count the spare ways. No room means the next thing you want to add, a heat pump, a new kitchen circuit, an EV charger, is blocked until the board is dealt with
  4. Any signs of heat? Discolouration, a smell, or anything warm to the touch is a call today, not a plan for next year
  5. Does it nuisance trip? Repeated tripping with no obvious cause sometimes points at the board itself rather than the circuits

Two or more of those and it is worth an assessment. None of them and your board is very likely fine.

Plenty of older boards are fine for now

This is the part that usually goes unsaid, so let me say it clearly. We do not upsell a board on every job. If yours has RCDs on the power and light circuits, room to spare and no signs of trouble, there is nothing to do, and we will tell you that.

What we will not do is pretend a board with rewireable fuses and no RCDs is as safe as a modern one, because it is not, and every future fault in that house is riskier than it needs to be.

Why this comes up so often on the coast

The housing stock. A lot of Red Beach, Stanmore Bay and Manly homes went up between the 1960s and the 1980s, and a good number still have their original boards. The wiring in those houses is frequently in decent condition. The protection in front of it is decades behind.

Out on the peninsula there is a second factor. Salt air is hard on everything electrical, and corroded connections cause a lot of the nuisance tripping we see around Whangaparaoa and Gulf Harbour.

When an upgrade stops being optional

Sometimes the board is not the job you came for, it is the job standing in the way of it.

  • Adding an EV charger. These need a dedicated circuit and specific protection. A full or ageing board will not take one
  • A new kitchen. Dedicated circuits for the oven and cooktop have to come from somewhere
  • A heat pump or underfloor heating. Same problem: capacity
  • A rewire, partial or full. No sense running new circuits into an old board

What the job looks like on the day

The power is off for a decent part of it, so we agree a day that suits and we tell you honestly how long to plan for. Empty the fridge of anything critical, and if you work from home, plan around it.

Occasionally we open a board and find the incoming supply also needs attention, which involves the lines company and is not something we can do unilaterally. We would rather flag that as a possibility up front than surprise you with it, which is another reason we look before quoting.

How do I know if my switchboard has RCDs?

Look for switches that are wider than the others and have a small test button on the front, usually marked T or Test. No test buttons anywhere on the board means no RCDs, and that is the most common reason we recommend an upgrade. You can check this without opening anything.

Is an old switchboard dangerous?

Not automatically. An older board with functioning breakers and RCDs can be perfectly fine. The combination that concerns us is no RCDs plus rewireable ceramic fuses, because then nothing in the board is protecting a person, only the wiring. Signs of heat or discolouration are a different matter and warrant a call straight away.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most domestic upgrades are a day, with the power off for a substantial part of it. We give you a realistic window before booking so you can plan around it. If the incoming supply also needs work the lines company gets involved, which we flag beforehand rather than on the day.

Do I need to upgrade my board to get an EV charger?

Not always, but it is the first thing we check. An EV charger needs its own circuit and specific protection, so the board needs both spare capacity and the right gear. On a full or ageing board the upgrade usually has to happen first, which is why we look at the board before quoting a charger.

Will I get paperwork for the work?

Yes. A switchboard upgrade is prescribed electrical work, so it is done by a registered electrician and certified on completion. Keep the certificate with your house documents, because it is what your insurer and any future buyer will want to see.
